Narrated by Jenny Hoops

Run Time: 7 hrs and 41 mins

Summary:

Government girl, Louise Pearlie, wants to help her friend Rachel escape Vichy France ahead of the Nazis. Somebody in her office drops dead and somebody else swipes the file that could potentially save her friend’s life.

Additional Comments:

  • I’ve only heard book 4 and book 1 so far. It’s an excellent series, but this (Book 1) wasn’t quite as good as book 4. Maybe because the author had to spend more time establishing Louise as a character.
  • Louise’s attraction to Joe is illogical (to her, the character), so it also doesn’t make much more sense to the reader. Maybe there’s room to grow in books 2 and 3.
  • For a woman not interested in a second husband, she seems to have the fellows tripping over themselves.
  • Louise’s first foray into espionage seemed to evoke realistic reactions (terror) in her.
  • There was at least one instance of super convenient timing, but that’s preferable than letting that particular scene reach the conclusion it was headed towards. The whole scene and the character’s rationalizations were off-putting.
  • As a period piece set around the 1940’s the book contains views and language that will trigger some people, but then again, it doesn’t take much these days. If you can’t read about the word “colored” without the urge to write a strongly worded letter, go read something else. Your loss, but there are lots of books out there in the world.
  • It’s like Agent Carter light.

Conclusion:

A decent start to a fascinating series with a cool heroine.
